Emery’s Aston Villa celebrate the arrival of 2023 with a victory at Tottenham’s home

Unai Emery’s slate has already given two ‘exhibitions’ on his return to the Premier League . In his debut with Aston Villa, he beat Erik ten Hag’s Manchester United 3-1 with a very high pace that burned the ‘red devils’. And he uncorked 2023 with a New Year’s ‘triumph’ at Tottenham’s home (0-2) in which he annulled Antonio Conte’s team, desperate before the visitor’s defensive solidity.

The ‘Villains’ have added nine points out of 12 possible with Emery defeating three teams from the ‘top 8’ (United, Brighton (1-2) and Tottenham) thus moving away from relegation. Only Liverpool (1-3) has been able to overcome the block of the Spanish coach. When the ex from Villarreal arrived, they were one point from the red zone and now they are comfortably installed in the middle of the table, with eight more than the elevator that goes down to Second . Europe is no longer impossible for a project that will have reinforcements in January that could give it a leap in quality.

Villa have achieved the same victories (three) with Emery as with Gerrard (three) in 13 days . A radical change with which they struck down a Tottenham in crisis. The ‘spurs’ have added seven points in the last seven games, looking further and further away from the first four places. Doubts begin to hover over a Conte for whom the World Cup break did not serve as a turning point. His defense is watery: they have been seven days! conceding at least two goals per game. And they are the ones that have made the most mistakes that have ended up in their tournament network (five).

Kane, the ‘pichichi’ of January 1 in the Premier (five goals), was left dry against a Birmingham team that was a rock despite not yet having ‘Dibu’ Martínez under the sticks. Villa resisted the local onslaught in the first half and the game matured as Emery had drawn in the second half. A perfect script.

Two choral plays in which two of their midfielders, coming from behind, signed the two goals that ended the match. Buendía in minute 50 (after a mistake by Lloris) and Douglas Luiz in minute 73 (after a pass between the lines by McGinn) knocked down some ‘spurs’ with no reaction, lost in the ‘Villano’ defensive network. They did not get up after the two visiting blows. Neither Son, nor Kane… No one worried Olsen. Emery always has a plan against the ‘big ones’. And in London it worked flawlessly. His Villa flies towards the ‘top 10’. 2023 starts well at Villa Park.
